July 3, 2009

Colleagues, friends and supporters of disability studies,

The Central Office of the Society for Disability Studies (SDS) has been based at the City University of New York since 2007. With the upcoming expiration of CUNY’s contract in 2010, SDS is actively seeking a new institutional partner to house the Executive Office on a long-term basis through renewable 3 to 5 year agreements. The relationship between organization and the current host institution remains strong; this is an anticipated transition predicated on the expiration of a contract.

Prior to delving into an explanation of what this entails, I would like to extend a hearty thank you to the current Executive Office staff at CUNY—especially, Bill Ebenstein, Ashleigh Thompson, Mariette Bates, Chris Rosa, and Pratik Patel. I am sure I speak for the entire membership when I note that SDS is indebted to all of you for your intensive efforts and CUNY’s many contributions on our behalf. We look forward to continuing the productive and satisfying collaborative relationships we have forged these past years.

Any entities interested submitting proposal to house SDS or requesting additional information, please address initial inquiries and informal letters of intent to Pam Block. The attached scope of work will provide additional information. All overtures will receive a reply. We would appreciate receiving letters of intent no later than October 1, 2009. Full proposals are due December 1, 2009. A full proposal should contain the following elements:

  • Description of the proposed host site including its relevance or relation to the field of disability studies and what it has to offer SDS in support of its development as an organization
  • Administrative capabilities to fulfill the scope of work and description of proposed organizational structure for the new SDS executive office
  • Proposed financial relationship with SDS

Please submit formal proposals to Pam Block.

Sincerely,

Pamela Block, Ph.D., President="
