Joe Stramondo & Guests
Like Disability Studies generally, Disability Bioethics has always been an applied or public facing field that puts scholarship in conversation with activism. Traditionally, however, these have been distinct activities, with scholarship being isolated in academic journals and university philosophy classrooms, while activists did their work at hearings, legislative visits, and protest actions. However, in a recent turn, more and more of what we might think of as disability bioethics has made its way into both medical training, practice, and policy development. This round table discussion will explore this pivot in the field that, ostensibly, bridges the gap between the ivory tower and clinical practice. Four bioethicists with distinctive career trajectories will explore questions about how disability bioethics can have the greatest positive impact on disabled people’s lives while still remaining a scholarly pursuit at its core.
